Rule of Law in Europe for Lawyers (ROLL)

June 14th, 2023

Judicial independence is a gateway to protecting access to justice and human rights. Yet it is under attach or under pressure in many EU countries nowadays.

That’s why together with the International Commission of Jurists, aditus foundation & Forum for Human Rights in close cooperation with Helen Duffy from Human Rights in Practice and supported by the participation of the Romanian Institute for Human Rights we have launched the international project “Rule of Law in Europe for Lawyers (ROLL).

It aims to provide lawyers across Europe with the knowledge and tools to better respond to situations that threaten the rule of law and judicial independence at the European level. The first workshops on institutional independence of the judiciary and autonomy of the prosecution service, including governance structures and procedures took place in Brussels on 13-14 June 2023. Free Courts Foundation was represented by Malgorzata Majewska and Michał Wawrykiewicz who presented some insights regarding judicial independence at national level and experiences on litigating before the European courts (ECtHR and CJEU).
