A subjective review of the 10 most important events of 2022 regarding the functioning of the judiciary

December 31st, 2022

In the shadow of the war in Ukraine and the economic crisis, the rule of law is being destroyed. Consistently, for the past seven years, the organs of our state – the Sejm, the President, the government, Julia Przyłębska’s politically subordinate Constitutional Court and the neo-NCJ – have been dismantling Polish democracy.

A subjective review of the 10 most important events of 2022 regarding the functioning of the judiciary, prepared for Onet by Maria Ejchart-Dubois Sylwia Gregorczyk-Abram and Michal Wawrykiewicz:

1. Landmark judgments of the European Court of Human Rights
2 Precedent interim measures – ECHR spreads protective umbrella over Polish judges.
3. The deepening destruction of the rule of law by the facade Constitutional Court.
4. The establishment of the neo-KRS bis and hundreds of new neo-judges
5. The KPO (RRF)
6. Deepening repression of judges
7. Judges return to adjudication, but … not all of them
8. Agreement for the Rule of Law: the rule of law in the hands of citizens
9. Hate scandal
10. Dismissal of the Real Ombudsman for our rights – Dr. Hanna Machińska

The coming year will be crucial. Despite extreme fatigue, civil society is active and not giving up. We will continue to observe the situation regarding the independence of the judiciary in Poland and use all possible legal measures to stop the process of its destruction. And, of course, we will keep you informed about this.
